President Droupadi Murmu delivered a speech on Friday marking the commencement of the Budget Session in Parliament. The address, which began at 11 am, was followed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's presentation of the Economic Survey. The session will run until April 4, divided into two phases: the first concluding on February 13 and the second resuming on March 10. In her address, President Murmu discussed a wide range of topics, focusing on India’s rapid development, government initiatives, and future goals, while also touching upon the challenges and significant events in the country.

A significant part of her speech was dedicated to highlighting India's advancements in various sectors, particularly in technology and artificial intelligence (AI), where India has increasingly taken the lead on the global stage. President Murmu emphasized the government’s role in lifting millions out of poverty through extensive welfare schemes, reaffirming India’s status as an emerging global powerhouse. She also acknowledged key reforms like the introduction of the One Nation, One Election (ONOE) initiative and the Waqf Bills. Furthermore, she expressed optimism about India’s trajectory, stating that the country is on track to becoming the third-largest economy in the near future.

In a somber note, the president expressed her condolences regarding the tragic stampede during the Maha Kumbh, held on Mauni Amavasya, and wished for the swift recovery of those injured in the incident.

Priority on Key Demographics

President Murmu stated that the government is focused on infusing new energy into India's development, with a particular emphasis on supporting the poor, middle class, youth, women, and farmers. She highlighted the unprecedented pace of work and development during the third term of the current government, noting that efforts are in full swing to meet the country’s goals for this period, referred to as the "Amrit Kaal" of India's journey. One notable initiative discussed was the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which will provide new homes to an additional three crore families, with a budget allocation of ₹5.36 lakh crore for this purpose. Additionally, the government has distributed 2.25 crore property cards under the SVAMITVA scheme, with 70 lakh of them being issued in the last six months alone. Furthermore, the "Dharti Aaba Tribal Village Utkarsh" campaign was launched with an allocation of ₹80,000 crore to uplift five crore individuals from tribal communities.

Empowering the Poor

In her address, President Murmu detailed the government’s efforts to provide a dignified life for the poor. This includes the construction of 12 crore toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the distribution of 10 crore free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, and the provision of rations for 80 crore needy citizens. Through such initiatives, 25 crore individuals have moved out of poverty and are now contributing to the creation of a “Neo Middle Class,” which plays a vital role in India’s growing economy.

Middle-Class Support

The president spoke about various measures taken for the welfare of the middle class, including the establishment of the Eighth Pay Commission, which lays the foundation for substantial salary increases for government employees. She also highlighted the government's decision to offer a 50% assured pension under the Unified Pension Scheme for lakhs of employees. Furthermore, she noted the government's efforts to help the middle class achieve their dream of owning a home, citing initiatives like RERA, which have shown the government's commitment to transparency and fairness in the real estate sector.

Women Empowerment

President Murmu emphasized the government's commitment to empowering women, pointing out the success of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserves seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. She also applauded the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) that have connected over 10 crore women across the country, enabling them to become financially independent. Through these initiatives, over 1.15 crore women have become “Lakhpati Didis,” with about 50 lakh achieving this status in just the last six months. The government has set a goal of 3 crore such women entrepreneurs. Additionally, President Murmu mentioned the Bima Sakhi campaign and the work being done by Banking, Digi-Payment, Krishi, and Pashu Sakhis, who are making strides in connecting remote areas to the financial system and promoting sustainable practices in agriculture and livestock.

Employment Generation

Acknowledging the youth’s role in nation-building, President Murmu lauded initiatives like Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Digital India, which have created numerous employment opportunities. The government has provided a record 10 lakh permanent government jobs in the past two years alone, and a ₹2 lakh crore package has been approved to enhance skills and create new employment opportunities for the youth.

Technological Advancements

Lastly, President Murmu highlighted India's strides in the field of digital technology. She commended the launch of 5G services, positioning India as a global leader in this area. She also mentioned the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has revolutionized digital payments in the country, further cementing India’s position as a hub for digital innovation.

President Murmu’s speech reflected the government’s focus on inclusive growth, technological advancements, and social welfare programs aimed at improving the lives of every Indian. It was a call to action for continued progress and unity as the country works toward becoming a global economic powerhouse.
