Alberta residents will receive an emergency alert test on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 1:55 p.m., alerting them to prepare for potential emergencies. The test is merely a system check, ensuring that the Alberta Emergency Alert system reaches all devices and channels across the province.
The test alert will be issued to various devices and channels, including television, radio, wireless devices, websites, social media, the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app, and compatible cellphones. This is a biannual test, usually occurring in May and November, allowing authorities to troubleshoot any issues with the system.
Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis recommends that Albertans download the Alberta Emergency Alert app and ensure their devices are compatible and connected to LTE 4G or higher or Wi-Fi to receive the alert. He also suggests using the test as a reminder to discuss emergency preparedness with friends and family and create an plan and emergency kit.
Ellis states, "A device may not issue the alert with sound if it is set to silent, and a user may have to acknowledge the alert on their device. This test is a great opportunity to review those settings and talk to those close to you about what to do in the event of a real emergency."
Alberta's Emergency Alert system is used to inform residents of emergencies such as tornadoes, wildfires, floods, and Amber alerts.
