Couple Donates Prematurely Born Foetus to AIIMS, Creating Landmark Moment in Organ Donorship

News of a couple's brave decision to donate their 5-month-gestation fetus to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has raised awareness and sparked conversation about organ and tissue donation in India. Harnaam Kaur, the devastated mother, courageously continued with the donation process after suffering a miscarriage. Kaur and her husband, Narinder Singh, have set a bold example by championing organ donation despite their grief, ultimately giving the gift of life to those in need.

Narinder Singh, a bank employee, and Harnaam Kaur, a housewife, had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child. However, midway through the pregnancy, there was a sudden demise of the fetus. The couple, who had previously never heard of fetal organ donation, were guided through the process by a team of doctors from AIIMS.

According to Sudhir Gupta, vice-president of the body organ donation committee, Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, this was a landmark moment in the committee's 28-year history. The hospital, which has already conducted over 8,000 kidney transplants, will use the fetal donor's kidneys to save the lives of two patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease. Dr. A.K. Dubey, the medical superintendent of AIIMS, highlighted the need for awareness and sensitivity towards families who have lost loved ones, emphasizing that organ donation is a invaluable gift of life.

The couple's act of kindness and generosity has sparked a significant conversation about organ donation in India. Given the country's dire need for organ donors, Kaur hopes that their story can inspire others to consider organ donation as a testament to the gift of life.
