Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Railway Minister of India and the creator of the famous Lalu Prasad Yadav Rashtriya Janata Dal, is facing charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy in a Delhi court. The court reserved its verdict on whether to reopen a case involving the convicted politician and others over charges of rigging tenders for the development of a medical college in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
Yadav and ten others are accused of fraudulent appointments by the medical college in exchange for lands in 2003. Yadav's counsel, however, contended that the land was sold to the medical college run by the Jharkhand government and no posts were given to them. The lawyer further argued that the transaction did not violate any appointment rules.
The court proceedings came after the CBI had filed a plea seeking further investigation in the case, asserting that the former minister had abused his power and caused a huge loss to the exchequer.
This is not the only legal roadblock for Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is already serving a prison sentence under a previous conviction for a different corruption case related to railway tenders.
The court has not announced a date for the verdict.
