Taxpayers and professional bodies in India are urging the government to extend the deadline for filing annual income tax returns (ITR) due to technical issues on the tax department's new e-filing website and ambitious compliance requirements. The All India Tax Associates Forum (ATBA), Kerala State Chartered Accountants' Association (KSCAA), and The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) have all pleaded with the government to act, requesting an extension of the deadline until October 15.
The IRSOFT website, launched in June to handle ITR filings, has suffered significant glitches, preventing accountants and individuals from completing filings or submitting requests for refunds. Taxpayers have experienced difficulties in uploading digital signatures, while certain ITR forms are unavailable on the portal. These issues have compounded what taxpayers already perceive as a disproportionately demanding compliance regime.
Despite assurances from the Finance Ministry that the portal will become fully functional by September 15, stakeholders say that an extension of the August 31 deadline is necessary to afford taxpayers relief and enable them to comply adequately. As of now, officials are reviewing these requests and gathering feedback from taxpayers across the nation to assess how best to proceed. While deadlines are important to maintain, it is also crucial that they are achievable, and that technical issues and complex compliance requirements should not discourage taxpayers from fulfilling their obligations.
