AI can bridge gender gap in tech sector, says report

An overwhelming majority of women in the tech industry believe that artificial intelligence will empower them to access better opportunities and bridge the gender gap in the sector, reveals a new report published by IBM. The report, based on a survey of 24,000 respondents across 133 countries, found that 75 percent of women in technology roles view AI as a positive force for change in the industry, despite only 25 percent of women in the field having a strong understanding of AI.

The findings demonstrate a pronounced optimism among women in tech about the potential of AI to improve workplace diversity and offer new opportunities for advancement. This comes despite recent research revealing that only 22 percent of AI professionals are women, and a report showing the gender gap in AI employment has gotten worse since 2013. However, the report also points to a glaring knowledge gap in this fast-growing industry, with many women feeling they lack the skills needed to fully capitalize on AI's potential.

"What is clear is the opportunity that AI offers to reshape and redefine how we think about workplace diversity and inclusion,"

In addition to the report, IBM also unveiled a new, five-year plan to expand its AI workforce and diversify its talent pool. The company committed to increasing the number of women in its workforce and achieving pay parity across all its locations. As part of these efforts, IBM joined the AI Talent Alliance, a coalition dedicated to fostering more diversity in the AI field. These actions reflect IBM's recognition that AI can play a pivotal role in creating a more inclusive and equitable workforce for women in the tech industry.
