Indian Cricket Team's Sponsor Deals to Be Finalised Within a Month

Indian cricket team's search for a new kit sponsor is set to conclude within the next month, according to senior BCCI official Rajeev Shukla, who confirmed the board is in talks with multiple companies, including footwear major Nike.

Cricket India, the BCCI's commercial arm, has been unable to finalise a deal since its one-year contract with fantasy gaming platform Dream11 expired and talks to extend it fell through due to the Indian government's stance on online gaming.

"There are talks with Nike, and some other companies too, so it should be finalised within a month," Shukla, a vice-president of the BCCI, told The Indian Express.

Shukla declined to reveal the names of the other companies but said they were from diverse sectors.

The Indian national team's jersey is one of the most visible and sought-after advertising spaces in world sport, with sponsors paying hundreds of millions of dollars to showcase their brands across the chest, sleeves, and other prominent positions.

The BCCI earned more than $357 million in sponsorship and broadcast fees from the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League, 40 per cent of which was deposited with the Indian cricket board.

The pending expiry of Dream11's deal and the BCCI's search for a new sponsor had been reported earlier by Reuters.

The board's deal with Nike, if materialised, would be the second major sponsorship agreement by the sportswear giant with a top cricket nation this year. In April, Nike replaced New Balance as England's kit sponsor with a record deal worth more than 130 million ($171 million).

The BCCI's deal with Nike would be worth slightly less, estimated at between $15 million to $20 million a year, according to a source with knowledge of the talks.

The source added that Nike had offered a 10 per cent performance-based incentive, which could push the deal's value to $17 million to $22 million.
