Saudi Arabia Strengthens Diplomatic Role, Advocates Two-State Solution Ahead of Arab Summit

Saudi Arabia has positioned itself as a key diplomatic player in addressing major global conflicts, with its efforts now extending to the Israel-Palestine crisis and the war in Ukraine. As Riyadh prepares to host a mini-Arab summit on February 21 to discuss the Gaza situation, leading Saudi commentators have reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to a two-state solution, rejecting any plans for the displacement of Palestinians.

At the Saudi Media Forum, which coincides with ongoing peace initiatives in Riyadh, prominent Saudi editors and analysts highlighted the country’s long-standing tradition of providing humanitarian aid and fostering diplomatic dialogue. Historian and commentator Jasser Al-Jasser emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to regional stability, pointing to the role of the King Salman Humanitarian and Relief Center, which has grown into one of the world's largest relief organizations.

Saudi Arabia has historically provided refuge to leaders and displaced populations, including Syrian refugees, former Tunisian President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, and Pakistani leaders Pervez Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif. Senior journalist Mishary Al-Dhaidi recalled how Saudi Arabia welcomed Kuwaitis, including the ruling family, after Iraq’s invasion in 1990, reinforcing the kingdom’s reputation as a safe haven during crises.

Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has taken an active role in shaping Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic stance, recently hosting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. With speculation growing about a potential summit between Prince Mohammed, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, Saudi Arabia’s influence as a neutral mediator is becoming increasingly evident.

Regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, Saudi commentators stressed that the kingdom has no direct conflict with Israel but remains firmly committed to the Palestinian cause. Al-Jasser reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s position, stating that "Palestine has always been an Arab Muslim country" and that normalization with Israel is contingent on the establishment of a two-state solution.  As Saudi Arabia continues to strengthen its diplomatic role, its upcoming summit with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, Egypt, and Jordan is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the region’s response to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
