After a long wait, the construction of the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) in Nellore has finally commenced, marking a significant milestone in the city's educational landscape. The project, which began with a foundation-laying ceremony in 2016 by prominent ministers, faced delays due to land acquisition and funding issues. Now, with these hurdles overcome, the RIE is set to transform teacher education across southern India.
The RIE is a prestigious institution, a constituent of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), and its presence in Nellore is largely due to the efforts of former union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu. The initial delay was caused by the Andhra Pradesh government's inability to acquire the designated 50.51 acres of land and disburse the sanctioned funds of 6.57 crores in 2018, leading to a lapse in funding. However, with the land now secured, NCERT has sanctioned a substantial 340 crores for the project, with 50 crores already released to initiate the construction.
Prof. B. Ramesh Babu, a key figure at the RIE, revealed that the first phase of construction will include essential infrastructure such as administrative and academic buildings, a hostel, and faculty housing, with a target completion date of 2027. The institute has already started offering courses, including a unique M.A. in Education Technology, and is preparing to introduce integrated B.Ed., M.Ed., and Ph.D. programs. The RIE in Nellore is the sixth such institute in India and the second in South India, poised to serve the educational needs of several states and union territories.
As the construction progresses, the RIE aims to become a comprehensive hub for teacher education, research, and resource development. Its impact will be felt across the region, with plans for a demonstration school, vocational training, and enhanced classroom technology. The institute's potential to elevate the quality of education and empower educators is a cause for celebration, signaling a bright future for Nellore and the surrounding areas.
