NxtCell India, a fully Indian-domiciled company, has
earmarked an initial investment of USD 30 million (approximately ₹260 crore) to
reintroduce the Alcatel brand into India's mobile phone market after a
seven-year hiatus. The company aims to offer locally manufactured smartphones
and establish a strong domestic footprint, according to a senior executive.
NxtCell holds the exclusive license for Alcatel—a French
consumer tech brand managed by TCL Communication under a trademark licensing
agreement with Nokia. The company plans to manufacture Alcatel smartphones
within India and is currently in the process of setting up its manufacturing
infrastructure and strengthening its supply chain.
“We have an initial investment plan of $30 million, but
future investments will depend on market response and the models we decide to
launch,” said Atul Vivek, Chief Business Officer of NxtCell India. He added
that the company also has ambitions to diversify into other consumer technology
segments and explore export opportunities, though the initial focus remains
firmly on the Indian market.
“If you can crack the Indian market, which is among the
toughest in the world, you can succeed anywhere. For us, India is the starting
point. Our long-term vision is to establish Alcatel as a globally recognized
brand, built in and out of India,” Vivek emphasized.
The company sees significant potential in the
₹20,000–₹25,000 price segment and plans to introduce smartphones in this range,
equipped with a stylus—a feature currently limited to premium devices priced
above ₹80,000. Alcatel has already partnered with Flipkart for online
distribution, including Flipkart’s main e-commerce platform and its
quick-commerce service, FK Minutes.
Alcatel’s first made-in-India smartphone is expected to
launch by late May or early June. The manufacturing is being handled by one of
India’s leading electronics manufacturing service providers, though the company
has opted not to disclose the name at this stage due to stock market
sensitivities.
“Our supply chain is being built in close collaboration with
a top-tier EMS player in India. We’re working to make cutting-edge technology
both accessible and manufactured locally,” said Ansh Rathi, Chief Operating
Officer of Alcatel.
According to Vivek, Alcatel’s re-entry will be backed by significant investment across manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, and distribution. The brand will adopt a digital-first strategy to appeal to India’s young, tech-savvy consumers, with a focus on innovative marketing and outreach campaigns.
“We’re not here for a short-term play. We are fully
committed to building a long-term presence and becoming a formidable player in
India’s smartphone ecosystem,” Vivek concluded.
