Gender Inequality Persists in Sindh's Education and Agriculture

In the bustling city of Hyderabad, a seminar at Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) has shed light on a pressing issue: the stark gender gap in education and employment within the region. A staggering revelation emerged from the discussions: over 80% of women in Sindh are denied access to higher education, a statistic that demands immediate attention. This disparity is further compounded by the fact that, despite their significant contribution to the agricultural sector, rural women in Sindh are consistently underpaid compared to their male counterparts.

The seminar, titled "Women Empowerment and Gender Equality," brought together academicians and social experts who shared insights on the challenges faced by women in the region. Among the speakers was SAU's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Engr. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal, who emphasized the economic implications of this gender inequality. He stated, "Empowering women is not merely a social justice issue; it is a catalyst for Pakistan's sustainable development." With women constituting more than half of Pakistan's population, addressing this gap is crucial for the country's progress.

Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar, Director of University Advancement and Financial Assistance, drew attention to the plight of women farmers. Despite their pivotal role in agricultural productivity, they remain marginalized in various aspects, including ownership, credit access, and market engagement. He advocated for recognizing women as full-fledged farmers, a transformative step for rural communities. The seminar's discussions also revealed that female literacy in rural Sindh lags, with less than 30% literacy, and women's participation in the national labour force is a mere 24.26%, indicating a dire need for inclusive policies and initiatives.
