Building Trust, One 'Akka': Female Cops' Unique Approach in Adilabad Schools

In a heartwarming initiative, women police constables in Adilabad, a district in India, are taking on a new role as 'police akkas' (elder sisters) to bridge the trust gap with young students, especially girls. This unique approach, introduced by Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhil Mahajan, aims to create a safe space for students to confide in the police about their problems and concerns.

On November 4th, the program was officially launched, and from the 6th, designated female constables from each police station began their visits to schools across the district. Constable Sony Vadaskar, during her interaction with students at the Zilla Parishad High School in a Bheempur village, shared her experience, "I told them they could call me 'akka' and that I was there for them as their 'chellis' (younger sisters). It's about building trust and ensuring they feel safe enough to share."

The 'police akkas' are not just breaking down barriers but also educating students about crucial topics like good and bad touch, cybercrime, and online safety. Vani Sri, who leads the 'She Teams' in Adilabad, emphasized, "We want to empower these girls to speak up. Regular interactions will build their confidence, ensuring they don't suffer in silence." The initiative has already shown promise, with a previous similar program leading to the arrest of a man for inappropriate touching after a student confided in the police.

This innovative approach by the Adilabad police is a step towards fostering a safer environment for students, particularly girls, and encouraging them to view the police as allies and protectors. With a dedicated helpline for reporting harassment and other issues, the 'police akkas' are set to make a significant impact on the lives of these young students.
