Electric Scooter Bursts Into Flames, Killing Andhra Woman While She Charges It At Home

electrically powered scooter burst into flames and killed a woman who was charging it at her home in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district, highlighting the dangers of lithium-ion batteries. Venkata Lakshmamma, who died in the incident on May 20, 2021, is survived by her husband, a diabetic, and two daughters, aged 22 and 14, who work as domestic help.

The electric scooter, marketed as environmentally friendly and cost-efficient, has emerged as a popular mode of transport in many countries, including India. But incidents of batteries exploding, like in the case of Venkata Lakshmamma, have raised concerns about their safety.

The victim was asleep on a sofa near the two-wheeler when the explosion happened. In another similar incident earlier this year, a man was severely burnt when his e-scooter exploded while he was riding it. Such incidents occur due to an internal short circuit in the battery cells, leading to overheating and, in some cases, explosions. These batteries are highly sensitive to both high and low temperatures and undergo thermal runaway when subjected to extreme temperatures. The resulting fire or explosion destroys the entire battery pack and spreads to the surroundings.

Experts have urged e-scooter manufacturers to ensure that their products undergo rigorous safety inspections and comply with international standards to prevent such tragedies. Until then, the risks of these rechargeable batteries outweigh the benefits of electric mobility.

Unfortunately, incidents of exploding lithium-ion batteries point to the need for stricter safety measures and better quality control in e-vehicle manufacturing. With the rise of electric mobility, it is imperative to prioritize consumer safety to prevent future tragedies.
