Popular Kannada film actress Ranya Rao is sentenced to a year in prison under the stringent COFEPOSA, in connection with a gold smuggling case. Authorities uncover evidence that Ranya, along with her husband, were pivotal players in a scheme to smuggle gold worth over 38 crores INR. Prosecutors argued that Ranya acted as a conduit to convert smuggled gold into fake ornaments and the couple has been using their influence to continue their operations.

The couple's residence in Bangalore was raided by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on February 2, 2023, during which 100 grams of gold worth around Rs. 12 lakh was seized. The officials also seized a few diaries containing details of transactions and a laptop.

Ranya Rao's lawyer argued that she was a minor player in the smuggling racket, and her husband controlled most of the operations. Ranya, who began her career as a child actor, has been working in the Kannada film industry for over a decade and has worked on several successful projects.

However, the court deemed her a flight risk, refusing to grant bail, and sentencing her to a year in prison. With this ruling, the court hopes to make a point that no individual, regardless of their status, will be spared from justice when it comes to nation-threatening crimes.
