Science and nation-building: How is India doing?

India has achieved rapid scientific and technological advancements. However, despite these advancements, India ranks low in scientific reasoning, and the population is reluctant to embrace the ideal of scientific temper. So, is the Indian population adhering to the spirit of scientific temper? This article will delve into this aspect and understand the barriers to scientific temper.

India has achieved leaps and bounds in the science and technology domain. The nation is rapidly emerging as a space and pharmaceutical giant, turning the heads of many global leaders. The founding fathers have envisioned a nation that thinks rationally with scientific temper. Having said that, are we, as a people, guided by this spirit in this era of technology?

Our schools and colleges teach us about Newton's laws and the biological wonders of Darwin's evolution. However, the population's application of logic and reasoning, which is the essence of science, fails to extend to everyday life. Sometimes, traditional beliefs and myths take precedence over well-established scientific facts.

For instance, many people hesitate to get vaccinated, fearing side effects despite scientists' repeated assertions clarifying these doubts. This aspect warrants an understanding of the underlying factors that cultivate this reluctance toward scientific temper.

Multiple factors, such as a lack of sufficient education and a lack of regard for scientific knowledge, are responsible for this predicament. As a result, the people of India struggle to think independently and instead rely on superstitions and traditional mindsets.

Despite several efforts to foster a culture of science in India, it seems relatively dormant. Therefore, it is essential to identify the barriers that prevent citizens from embracing scientific temper. Unless these roadblocks are eliminated, the spirit of science will remain hypothetical.

Perhaps it is time to reassess our outlook and prioritize logical, rational thinking and science at the forefront of our nation-building mission. After all, the progressive evolution of a society depends on its collective rational thinking and scientific temperament, both of which are indispensable.
