The rise of artificial intelligence is threatening the entry-level job market for tech graduates, with job openings declining by more than half since 2019, a new report has found. The analysis by talent acquisition firm Harvey Nash and job site Dice reveals a rapidly changing landscape for new graduates entering the workforce.
"Artificial intelligence is no longer a concept of the future. Advances in technology have brought AI into our present, and it's having a significant impact on the job market," said Bob Melkonian, president of Dice. "While AI is streamlining many processes in tech industries, it is also replacing entry-level positions that were previously handled by new grads."
The report highlights a particular impact on tech roles, with job openings declining 52% since 2019. Software developers, IT analysts, and computer research scientists are among the roles impacted. While AI and automation may result in some job losses, they also pave the way for new roles in fields like cybersecurity, data analysis, and AI development.
The report's authors suggest that graduates need to stay ahead of the curve and have a diverse skill set, including knowledge of AI essentials, to thrive in this changing job market.
"The key is to stay adaptable and embrace a growth mindset," said Melanie Chase, chief people officer at Vizier, a company that uses AI to optimize business performance. "This evolving job market presents a unique opportunity for recent grads to showcase their talent and drive, and contribute to innovative projects that make a meaningful impact."
As the job market continues to evolve with advancements in AI, staying ahead of the curve has never been more important for new graduates in the tech sector.
