Drug seizures just shy of 3 million loom large over a Irish man in Gorey District Court
A Gorey District Court heard testimony yesterday regarding the seizure of cannabis with an estimated value of 3 million euros. Detectives presented charges against a 51-year-old man, Tony Abbey, of Tullow in Co. Carlow. Mr. Abbey was arrested following the discovery of 150.6 kg of herbal cannabis found in a truck that arrived on a ferry from Bilbao, Spain.
The detective emphasized the seriousness of the charges and deemed Mr. Abbey a flight risk. Despite this, the court granted bail to Mr. Abbey on the condition that he provide 40,000 euros in independent surety as well as 20,000 euros from his own finances as a deposit. Furthermore, he has to stay in Ireland, sign on twice a day at the Tullow Garda Station, observe a curfew from 11 pm to 7 am, and provide a mobile phone number.
This case will be heard in the Wexford District Court on Wednesday.
