The annual countercultural festival, Burning Man, held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, has faced multiple arrests ranging from drug to gun charges. According to Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen, 12 people have been arrested during the first two days of the event, most of which were for possession of narcotics. Allen expresses his concern for the event's safety due to the lack of thorough searching for contraband and weapons by the festival organizer. In his 10 years as sheriff, Allen has grown accustomed to the challenges that come with the attendees from all over the world converging in such a remote location. He states that aliases and costumes make it challenging for law enforcement to investigate cases of assault.
Burning Man has grown in popularity over the years, with 70,000 attendees this year, which has resulted in more frequent arrests. In 2024, there were 28 arrests, compared to 13 in 2023. However, it has declined significantly since 2018, which reached a high of 44 arrests.
The Bureau of Land Management also has authority over the event and can arrest and cite people, but they have not released information this year.
