The UK automotive industry is preparing for a transformative decade, with major employers committing to a significant skills initiative to support the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. According to a recent survey by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the UK automotive sector plans to increase apprenticeship numbers by nearly 16% in 2025. This move aligns with the industry’s green growth strategy, ensuring the workforce is equipped to drive the next generation of zero-emission vehicles.
As National Apprenticeship Week 2025 unfolds, attention is drawn to the exciting opportunities available within the automotive sector. Over the past two years, the UK has invested more than £20 billion in its EV transition, leading to a heightened demand for professionals skilled in advanced technologies.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, shared his thoughts on the industry's future: “Britain’s automotive sector is on the verge of a ‘green growth decade,’ with billions invested not only in electric vehicles but also in the new talent needed to design, build, and maintain them. Automotive is one of the most thrilling industries in the world, and as we aim for growth, we need new apprentices who can grow with us. Our promise is to offer well-paid, rewarding careers.”
The demand for skilled workers has already seen a surge in apprenticeship numbers. In this academic year alone, over 550 apprentices have joined the sector, with an additional 740 positions still available. This increase follows a 40.8% rise in new apprenticeship starts in 2023, opening up long-term, lucrative career paths across the country. Opportunities cover various fields, from research and development to manufacturing, vehicle maintenance, and supply chain logistics.
Among the most sought-after roles are design and development engineers, EV technicians, and specialists in batteries and power electronics. These positions are essential to sustaining industry growth, with more than 180 zero-emission vehicle models, including cars, vans, trucks, and buses, already available in the UK, and more set to launch in 2025.
As the UK accelerates its EV transition, having a skilled workforce is crucial for continued progress. Apprenticeship programs must adapt to incorporate the latest vehicle technologies, including EV design, manufacturing, testing, maintenance, and repair. The need for continuous upskilling makes addressing this skills transition a top priority.
To tackle this challenge, the launch of Skills England and the new Growth & Skills Levy aims to improve access to automotive training, helping businesses of all sizes across the UK. These initiatives will strengthen the workforce and enhance the UK's position as a global leader in electric vehicle innovation.
The ongoing investment in workforce development is essential for ensuring the UK’s competitiveness in the global automotive market. Automotive employers are taking significant steps to close the skills gap, investing in advanced training programs to prepare employees for the complexities of EV production, including battery technology, software integration, and energy efficiency solutions. As the UK Government and industry leaders focus on green growth, there has never been a better time for aspiring professionals to enter the automotive sector.
