India is making a bold move in the global artificial intelligence race by launching a large-scale initiative to develop its own AI models, competing with the likes of ChatGPT and DeepSeek R1. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government is calling for proposals to build foundational AI models tailored to India's linguistic, cultural, and technological needs. This initiative is part of a broader Rs 10,370 crore plan to establish the country as a leading AI powerhouse.

To support this mission, the government has selected 18 AI solutions for funding in the first phase. Additionally, it has secured 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs) from major companies like Yotta, Jio Platforms, and Tata Communications, ensuring a strong computational backbone for AI development. Nearly half of these GPUs are being provided by Yotta alone, demonstrating the country’s commitment to high-end AI infrastructure.

The initiative focuses on training AI models using Indian datasets, ensuring they cater specifically to the country’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape. The goal is to develop AI that is free from external biases while effectively addressing India's unique challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. To achieve this, the government is offering substantial support, including a 40% subsidy on GPU costs, making high-end computing more affordable and accessible.

The IndiaAI Mission is also prioritizing innovation in AI applications. Selected startups and developers are being encouraged to build AI models within the next 10 months, with funding and infrastructure support from key industry players such as E2E Networks and Locuz Enterprise Solutions. With Rs 4,563.36 crore allocated for GPU subsidies and Rs 689 crore dedicated to AI application development, the government aims to create a thriving AI ecosystem.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized that India is not behind in the AI race but rather strategically positioned to create cost-effective, scalable AI solutions. He highlighted that while China's DeepSeek model has demonstrated that high-performance AI can be built affordably, India aims to develop even better models at lower costs. The initiative will ensure that AI models are aligned with ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks, such as the DPDP Act and IT Act, promoting fairness and transparency in AI deployment.

Proposals are now being invited from startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs to develop foundational AI models, including large language models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs). These models will be evaluated based on their societal impact, innovation potential, and adherence to ethical AI principles. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for presentations, with funding options ranging from direct grants to equity investments.

India’s AI push is not just about economic growth but also about shaping a future where AI plays a transformative role in industries, governance, and everyday life. By fostering innovation and collaboration, India aims to establish itself as a global leader in AI, ensuring that technological advancements align with ethical and inclusive development.
