The ITE&C Department of the Government of Telangana has announced an ambitious and innovative datathon aimed at creating a Telugu Large Language Model (LLM) to preserve the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Telugu-speaking communities. In collaboration with Swecha, this event will be conducted across all engineering colleges in Telangana and marks a pivotal moment in the integration of language, culture, and artificial intelligence (AI).
This datathon is a joint effort between the ITE&C Department, Swecha, and Telangana’s leading educational and technological partners. The Emerging Technologies Wing will spearhead the initiative, while the Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge (TASK) will be responsible for outreach. Prestigious institutions and industry players, such as IIITH (International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad), Ozonetel, DigiQuanta, and TechVedika, will also play critical roles as research and industry partners. The datathon serves as a precursor to the highly anticipated Global AI Summit in Hyderabad this September.
The central objective of the datathon is to collect and digitize a wide array of Telugu cultural and linguistic resources, particularly those passed down through oral traditions. Participants will focus on gathering data from folk tales, local histories, songs, and traditional knowledge related to food and cuisine. This data will be key in developing the Telugu LLM, which aims to improve the language’s digital representation on AI platforms, thereby preserving these invaluable cultural elements for future generations.
Undergraduate students from across Telangana will engage in this enriching experience, contributing to the larger goal of creating a comprehensive Telugu LLM that will strengthen the cultural and linguistic identity of the Telugu-speaking population while driving academic and technological progress.
