In a landmark digital initiative, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to allow voting via a mobile app in upcoming elections in Bihar. This will be the first time that any Indian state allows voting through digital means.
According to EC, the app has been designed to allow voters to use their smartphones to cast their vote securely and safely. ample digital security measures have been put in place to ensure that the app is "tamper-proof".
The Commission also elaborated on how the e-voting process cannot be tampered with by outsiders. EC maintained that the app would not affect the existing electoral process and would only facilitate casting of votes.
The app will require voters to enter a password, which will be sent to their registered mobile number via an SMS. The voter will then have to show their vote to the presiding officer before casting it using the app. The officer will then authenticate the voter's identity and allow them to cast their vote.
Bihar will be the first state to pilot this technology, aiming to boost voter turnout. Given the unprecedented health emergency posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated risks of voting in person, the app is expected to reduce crowding at polling booths and minimize the health risks associated with in-person voting.
This initiative is part of the ECI's efforts to ensure that no voter is left behind and every voter has the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote safely, regardless of their economic circumstances or geographic location.
