A recent investigation by the Telangana Gouvernment's Drug Control Department has raised concerns about the functioning of deaddiction centres in the state. The investigation found that a staggering 14 out of 16 centres are poorly staffed and lack adequate facilities to provide proper treatment to patients.
The findings reveal that,
only two centres out of 16 are performing well with regard to patient care, infrastructure, and staff responsiveness. The other 14 centres are lacking in sufficient doctors, counsellors and other medical staff to provide proper care.
The shortage is exacerbated by a lack of adequate bedding, proper food facilities, and inadequate infrastructure to attend to the specific needs of patients undergoing treatment.
This is despite the fact that the demand for these centres has only increased over the years, with rising drug abuse rates among Telangana's youth.
To address these issues, the Drug Control Department has proposed increased monitoring and regular inspections of all centres to ensure they meet the required standards of care. They also advocate for a specialised training programme for the staff of these centres.
This is an urgent call for action to improve the functioning of deaddiction centres, to meet the growing demand for their services in Telangana.
This reveals a need for the state government to allocate more resources and undertake reforms for these centres to effectively combat the drug crisis in the region.
